To the unknowing common man Baba appeared to be a simple beggar dressed in torn clothes making his rounds with his begging bowl, door to door along the streets of Shirdi. To the pious and devoted seekers, Baba was Satguru who showed them the righteous path to the divine. To the enlightened few, Baba manifested himself as none other than Sadashiva.
The above question had no clear answer during the time of Sree Shirdi Sai Baba. The world came to know the truth about Shirdi Sai, only when Bhagawan Sree Sathya Sai Baba in January 1974 at Whitefield, revealed the secrets related to His previous incarnation. The story is beautifully elaborated in Sree Sai Sacharita which says that Sree Mahadev along with Devi Sree Parvathy had appeared to Devagiri Amma, the physical mother of Shirdi Sai, and blessed her. Lord Shiva promised Devagiri Amma that he will take birth as her third child. Bhagawan Sree Sathya Sai Baba revealed that, this third son of Devagiri Amma and Ganga Bhave, later came to be known to the world as Sree Shirdi Sai Baba.
After His childhood days, young Sai came back to Shirdi in the year 1858 and lived his remaining life in a dilapilated mosque. This Masjid, known as Dwarakamayi still exists in Shirdi showering Baba’s blessings upon millions of Sai devotees even today. Baba was always immersed in divine silence, occasionally uttering the word ‘Allah Malik’. Sri Shirdi Sai philosophy ingrained 'Shraddha' meaning faith and 'Saburi' meaning Patience and Perseverance. According to Baba, ‘Shraddha’ and ‘Saburi’ are the supreme attributes for realization of the self.
Like all avathars in this universe, Baba also incarnated on earth to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and the needy, to spread the message of unconditional love and compassion, to break the man made walls of religion and caste, and to restore and protect the Sanathana Dharma.
